A State Of Trance festival revealed their mainstage line-up for ASOT 900 a couple of weeks ago. Ahead of the big event, taking place at the Jaarbeurs venue in Utrecht, The Netherlands, every year. The biggest name on the schedule is without a doubt Above & Beyond, who return to ASOT for the first time in 8 years. While the first reactions are overly positive, trance purists might scratch their heads…
With acts like MarLo, Future Code (Ben Gold & Omnia) and Estiva the main focus seems to be the big room house influenced side of modern trance, while Cosmic Gate and Above & Beyond stepped away from their sound already long ago. Psytrancers Vini Vici round out the line-up, and together with host Armin Van Buuren seem to be the only act who could possibly bring some uptempo energy to the stage.
The choice for mostly modern trance seems particularly odd, as the classic sound, and producers of it, seem to have started a resurgence. After Ferry Corsten resurrected Gouryella 3 years ago, producers like M.I.K.E. Push, Solarstone and The Thrillseekers seemed to get back to their classic sound, or, if they stayed true to it, regained some popularity. Even Armin himself jumped in on this with new releases under his Rising Star-alias. One or two of these acts would definitely have deserved a return to the limelight of the ASOT-mainstage.
Fans of the classic trance sound will also find no respite in the line-ups announced for the Progressive and Psy Trance stages (announced yesterday). This, despite the inclusion of notable talents such as John’00’ Fleming, Paul Thomas & Astrix.
As the mainstage is the biggest and prettiest of the stages, it could possibly be a hard choice for lovers of the more emotionally driven sounds to avoid the mainstage altogether. On the bright side, earlier editions of ASOT proved that, with 4 or 5 differently influenced stages to choose from, purchasing a ticket for this edition could still be a no-brainer, and with ASOT announcing today, that 89% of regular tickets have already sold out it would seem there’s not much time left for them to make that decision!
